Time: Meet at 10:45am
Treasure Hunt starts promplty at 11:15am after the event briefing.
Location: Wynnum Redlands Canoe Club boat ramp, Railway Parade, Thorneside
Our July event is a treasure hunt that will take the form of a fun two hour Paddle-o-gaine, which is a bit like orienteering on SUPs.
You will work in teams of 2-4 and each team will have a map and a clue sheet. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be expert at reading maps - just at finding clues, choosing the best route and paddling hard.
Teams will start together and will have two hours to paddle in any direction they like, using the map and clue sheet to navigate and visit as many check points as they can to collect as many points as they can. All teams must return to base within 2 hours.
You only need to paddle as far and for as long as you want. It is not about paddling the furtherest, but reading the map, choosing your route carefully and having fun finding the checkpoints & clues. You can pick your route to match the ability of the team and to get the most checkpoints. There'll be a channge in for everone, from the diehards to the tryhards!
The mapped area we will be using starts at the Wynnum Redlands Canoe Club and covers Lota Creek, down to Tingalpa Creek mouth and some way up Tingalpa Creek. Teams can choose their route and only paddle as far as they can in two hours.
Keep an eye on the time, make sure you have enough time to get back to base within the 2 hour time limit. Penalties may apply for late arrivals!
Join us for a social BBQ after the event.
Who is the event suitable for?
To get the most out of the event, paddlers will need some paddling experience and the event is not suitable for total beginners. It’s winter! And the wind and tide conditions can vary a lot in Tingalpa Creek and you may need to be able to paddle quite hard to get across Tingalpa Creek (especially if it is windy) but Lota Creek is nice and sheltered.
What to bring
Detailed instructions for the treasure hunt will be posted on the website soon (if you're wondering how we'll use maps on our boards!). Follow our Facebook page for updates on the event especially in the event of windy and wet winter weather.
